After the victories in Adelboden and on the Lauberhorn, Marco Odermatt is chasing the magical triple. The superstar is also the big favorite for the two descents in Kitzbühel.
Odermatt did not set the best time in the first training. In the first scan with the Streif he reached the finish in 1:58.94 seconds, losing 1.88 to the best time of Cameron Alexander (Ka). After all, Odermatt is the 14th best Swiss, 16 hundredths ahead of Stefan Rogentin (16th) and 21 hundredths ahead of Justin Murisier (18th). Gilles Roulin is in 23rd place, 2.56 seconds behind. Niels Hintermann (31st) has already lost 3.31 seconds to the best time.
Behind Alexander, Otmar Striedinger (Ö, 0.47 back) and Mattia Casse (It, 0.62) take the lead in training. The driver who could cause Odermatt the most trouble in the last speed races loses a lot of time: Cyprien Sarrazin from France is more than six seconds behind.
Odermatt does not want to comment on his first test ride of the year in Kitzbühel and leaves the finish area without being interviewed. He needs rest after the intense past weeks.
This does not apply to the other Swiss. Justin Murisier, who fell in Wengen, subsequently complained of pain in his patellar tendon. He approached the training trip with due respect. But he felt at ease when he reached the steep slope. “After that it was a great ride.”
Murisier appreciates that the Streif seems tamer than before. Peter Obernauer, former race director in Kitzbühel, even speaks of the most beautiful Hahnenkamm descent in 45 years.
“Some say it’s too simple,” says Murisier. But he couldn’t compare it with the wild years, after all, last year he went to Kitzbühel for the first time. “Last year they said it was a very easy version, the track was so beautifully prepared. This year it is even better, really great,” says Murisier. “For me it remains rock ‘n’ roll. But not as violent as before.”
Niels Hintermann, who explains his great loss of time by material problems, sees it the same way. «Compared to my first trips here, it is much quieter and less icy. That’s how it should be for the first training.” Too simple? I absolutely cannot find Hintermann.
In any case, the Swiss agree: as the track develops towards the races, it will probably become much more turbulent.
Robert Trenkwalder, Odermatt’s supervisor at Red Bull and long-time Austrian downhill coach, also says this: “On Saturday the track will be so busy that the athletes will have to unpack their seat belts.”
