Lulu Sun (WTA 193) took some time to get going in her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, but improved considerably in the second set. Yet it was not enough for the 22-year-old from Geneva to surprise the number 66 in the world.
It wasn’t until 5:6 that Sun had to give up her serve for the first time in the second round – after previously being only two points away from tying the set at 5:4 and 30:30. Ultimately, the Italian of the same age was slightly stronger and more experienced in her tenth Grand Slam tournament. The New Zealand-born daughter of a Croatian and a Chinese mother was unable to break in four chances.
Still, she can be satisfied with the trip Down Under. In Auckland she reached the round of 16 at WTA level for the second time in her career, and in Melbourne she qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. In the rankings it improves to 190th in the region.
This means that only one Swiss woman, Viktorija Golubic, remains in the tournament.
