The situation between us has been “fairly clarified”, says YB coach Raphael Wicky (46) when asked whether he will finally receive a new contract in the new year. “Reasonably resolved.” That sounds like total unity. After that, only details are missing. But far from it!
“We will sit together over the next four, six or eight weeks and see how the two sides feel. And what will happen in the future,” the 46-year-old explains. “I still have six months left on my contract and I’m pretty relaxed about it. And very focused on the short preparation and the start of the second half of the season.”
So everything is still possible? Sports director Steve von Bergen (40) also said in December that they would meet at the beginning of this year.
Does YB really not want to renew as soon as possible with the man who won the third double in club history? What earned YB its third participation in the Champions League and therefore approximately 30 million francs? Who will face Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League round of 16? And who has every chance to defend the championship title as the clear Super League leader and repeat the cup victory? Is anyone stuck on the Bernese leadership team?
The resident of Upper Valais confirms that no discussions have yet taken place. And when asked if it was his wish to continue in Bern, he again dodged it and simply said that he really enjoyed working here, was very happy and was very proud to be a YB coach. Wicky: “It’s about whether both parties can imagine that it will continue. Are there things you need or want to change? Or is one party suddenly no longer satisfied or not satisfied at all? Then you have to talk to each other. And we will do that in the coming weeks.”
Or is Wicky even playing for time? Does he have a (still) non-binding offer from a major league, such as the Bundesliga? Something strange seems to be going on. We will know the answer at the end of February. Probably.
