Two runs and a Super-G in 48 hours. Wengen’s gigantic program ends on Saturday with a new demonstration of power by Marco Odermatt – and leaves its mark. Three serious injuries overshadowed what was otherwise a historic ski weekend.

Kohler underwent successful surgery after a serious injury on the Lauberhorn

On Thursday, Swiss Marco Kohler (26) fell in the Hanneggschuss and seriously injured his knee. New father Alexis Pinturault (32) was hit by a car on Friday. The Frenchman broke his hand and tore his anterior cruciate ligament when he fell on the Silberhorn jump. In the classic on Saturday, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (31) will meet each other in the finish S. The ski season is over for all three drivers. Numerous other drivers also crashed, but fortunately no one was seriously injured.

The high stress caused by the ski calendar is enormous for the athletes. Marco Odermatt told ORF in the finish area: “This is not criticism, but hopefully a lesson for everyone – for every location, every association and for the FIS, more is not always better.”

Unwise replacement race in Wengen?

At 4.5 km, the Lauberhorn descent is the longest World Cup descent. Many people are angry that the replacement run for Beaver Creek was scheduled here on Thursday.

“It is a very challenging week physically and mentally. These are long days, on Friday I couldn’t have lunch until half past one. Then comes the regeneration program,” says Niels Hintermann in the finish area on Saturday. Furthermore: “Brually speaking, the falls are driving errors. But somewhere the errors are caused by external factors. It would be unfair to find the fault in only one place.”

“We all push ourselves to the limit”

And Dominik Paris also sees the reason for the heavy crashes in Wengen during the many races: “We all push ourselves to the limit. I don’t think double runs are ideal, either in Kitzbühel or elsewhere.”

The next double charge will take place next week. In Kitzbühel there are two more departures within two days.
