Always this headache. Always this nausea. But Roman Buess (31) didn’t mind it for two months, after all, training and playing was still possible. Only when he woke up again on January 2 with bad symptoms and did not know how to get out of bed and go to the Schützenwiese for the start of FC Winterthur’s training, it became clear: now we had more precise clarifications! Because the inflammation of the frontal sinus, which was suspected after Christmas, should have subsided long ago.
An MRI scan is made of Buess’ head. The former striker of FCB, Aarau, Thun and St. Gallen never expected the result: thrombosis of the cerebral veins!
In the Blick interview, Buess recalls: “The diagnosis was a shock! And it scared me very much. Blood clots in the head – that sounds really bad at first. Fortunately, the doctors were able to reassure me by telling me that the thrombosis had been discovered in time.
With such a diagnosis, even the sporting ambitions of a professional football player take a back seat. Buess: “In the beginning I already thought about what could have happened. I had to stay in the hospital for three days, which was tough. I’m glad I’m healthy and didn’t need surgery. But I’m slowly starting to feel the frustration that I haven’t been able to play football well for a long time.”
Buess, who scored sixteen goals for Winti in the Super League in the 2021/2022 season, will be out for at least three months. During this time he must take blood thinners in the form of tablets. Whether it will take longer remains to be seen: only when the clot in his head has completely dissolved will he be allowed to participate in duels and aerial duels again. Until then, the risk of a lot of blood loss from an open wound is too great.
After all, he can start fitness training again next week. Buess will be fit when he returns to team training. “I hope to be able to intervene again this season.” Despite the thrombosis shock, it is clear to the two-time goalscorer this season: “I definitely want to get back on the field!”
