This summer, FCB put a transfer fee of almost four million francs on the table for Juan Gauto (19). In the friendly match against the great Bayern Munich (1:1) last Saturday, the Argentinian jewel had to sit on the bench. Roméo Beney (18), who was part of Basel U21 in November, started for him on the right wing.

But in recent weeks the homegrown player has emerged as FCB’s new hope. Beney crowned his professional debut against Lugano (3-1) in early December with his first goal. This will be followed by two more appearances and the starting eleven debut against Bayern. The reward for the strong performance: Beney receives a professional contract until 2027 and is now a permanent member of the first team selection.

The fact that Roméo Beney suddenly took off at FCB is mainly due to coach Fabio Celestini (48). “After his goal against Lugano, everything happened very quickly. But I think he has great potential,” Celestini said after the 2-3 defeat in the friendly against FC Aarau. “He must continue calmly and patiently and play for FCB for the next two to three years.”

Dad Nicolas Beney can finally become a father

Father Nicolas Beney (43) knows the challenges a professional career entails. As a goalkeeper, he played 87 games in the top Swiss league for Sion, Wil, Yverdon and Aarau during his career. “He is much further along than I was at his age,” he says about his son. He is not surprised that Roméo has now reached the professional level. “That was always his big dream. Before he could say anything, he had already kicked a ball.”

Despite a professional contract and a starting eleven debut, father Nicolas puts the brakes on the euphoria. “This is just a first step. Everything that awaits us will be a great challenge.” However, he himself can now take a more relaxed approach. “The match against Bayern was a bit strange for me. For the first time I just felt like a father and no longer an analyst.”

Brazilian genes in Roméo

Sister Iman (17) of all people has already shown where Roméo Beney’s path could lead. After strong performances at Club YB, the attacking player even made her debut in the A-Nati last summer. The super talent only missed the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand due to a cruciate ligament injury.

Nicolas Beney can’t say which of his two children is more talented. One difference, however, is that Roméo’s mother’s Brazilian genes are more visible. “On the field he is more relaxed and a bit more playful than Iman,” Beney said. Two qualities that can no longer hurt FCB after the first half of the season.
