This causes the motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain to degenerate. As the disease progresses, muscle weakness, movement limitations, and speech, breathing, and swallowing disorders occur.

Illness brings many people together

Darby is now dependent on a wheelchair. A few days ago, the 35-year-old spoke about his illness during a TV recording for “BBC Breakfast” at Anfield Road. His voice is weak. He takes longer pauses while speaking.

Still, Darby tries to keep up the depressing atmosphere: “MND brings many different types of people together. We are united in the fight for the cure and treatment of the disease.” To do this, he founded “The Darby Rimmer Foundation” in 2022 together with Chris Rimmer, who died from the disease. Since then, the foundation has raised 1.5 million euros.

On a sporting level, the trained right back launched his career with Liverpool FC in the 2006/07 season. In total he appeared on the field 23 times for the Reds.
