Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (68) hopes for a large memorial service in the Allianz Arena for the late Franz Beckenbauer (†78). “FC Bayern should organize a memorial service in the stadium in gratitude and in his memory, which would never have existed without him!” says Rummennigge in “Bild”.
“He was my captain at FC Bayern, my coach at the national team, our president at Bayern and in all these roles he was not only successful but also unique,” Rummenigge previously said he was deeply shocked in a statement from FC Bavaria. “German football loses the greatest personality in its history.”
According to “Bild”, Rummenigge and Bavaria’s honorary president Uli Hoeness have already discussed the possibility of a memorial service at the Allianz Arena, which seats 75,024 spectators, and the feasibility will be further explored on Tuesday.
Former national coach Berti Vogts also wants a special honor for the late Franz Beckenbauer – and makes a concrete suggestion to the German Football Association (DFB): “It is important that his name is not forgotten by the next generations of footballers. Perhaps the DFB should think about naming the DFB Cup after Franz Beckenbauer, for example,” Vogts told the “Rheinische Post”.
Beckenbauer died on Sunday at the age of 78. He became world champion as a player (1974) and team manager (1990). “Germany loses, besides Pele, the best footballer Germany has ever had and the best in the world,” Vogts continued. (AFP/dti)
