The snow is soft, the skis rattle, it’s a struggle. But Camille Rast (24) mastered the test with flying colors. The Valais equaled her best result of her career with a fourth place in the slalom in Kranjska Gora (Sln). Even a day later you can still see her pride. «I am really satisfied. This result is important for me because there are a lot of points and I hope my bib position improves soon,” she said.
In fact, Rast is climbing up the Slalom World Cup starting list and is now number 21 in the world. Your next goal: a starting number between 8 and 15 – that would be a big advantage. But that is not everything. Rast: “The slalom in Kranjska Gora showed me that I can ski very well when conditions are difficult. That gives me a lot of confidence.”
Her new outfitter is crucial to the mountain bike enthusiast’s newfound safety. After a largely unsuccessful season at Salomon, she returned to Head in the spring, the brand she trusts. This decision turns out to be a lottery pick. «I grew up on this ski. I know the material very well,” says Rast.
Rast does not regret his decision to try something new with Salomon. She emphasizes that the collaboration was good and that she was able to learn a lot. In the end, she didn’t find the perfect setup. Contrary to popular belief, the skis were not the biggest problem. «The Salomon shoes were too aggressive for me. “It was difficult for me to adapt to it,” she says self-critically.
Rast and Salomon tried everything, but in the middle of the season it was a huge job to make and break in a new ski boot. There simply wasn’t enough time for that. In addition, Rast was braked when driving on gentle slopes. An aggressive shoe and aggressive snow – she was afraid of getting hurt.
Those days are over. Rast emphasizes that it was not just the material setup that caused problems last winter. She also had problems with her knees, she always felt tired and was sick several times. “That is why I paid special attention to my health after the season. My body needed a break.”
Rast treated himself to a two-week holiday in Dubai (UAE). “I was on my cell phone a lot less and didn’t do anything on social media,” she says. And adds with a smile: “A lot of people think I’m almost hyperactive. But I’m actually quite good at doing nothing. I made a miraculous recovery and was very enthusiastic about fitness training when I returned.”
By the way: Rast loves the sea, but especially from the coast. “I swim, but I don’t really like water in general. Sometimes I do stand-up paddling, but kitesurfing or something like that is not for me.” The most important thing is that Rast feels comfortable on frozen water – that is certainly the case at the moment.
