The head outsmarts the body: how HCD defender Dominik Egli survives the gigantic program

Dominik Egli is the HCD player with the most ice time. The defender plays an average of just over 23 minutes per match. In the game against Servette it took more than 24 minutes. This was also the tenth match within 19 days for the team from Davos – including the Spengler Cup. This does not go unnoticed by the players.

That’s why Egli says: “You have to make good use of the days between matches.” The 25-year-old is one of those residents of Davos who is in the audience despite optional training. “I need that, I still have to train, competitions don’t make you physically fitter.” He thinks that long-lasting and vulnerable joints – in his case the shoulder – need special attention and care.

However, the most important thing for Egli is on the days without matches: “Clear your head, don’t think about hockey.” A challenge in New Year’s Eve week when the hockey world meets in Davos. But for Egli, who has the same mental coach as NHL star Roman Josi, this is crucial in a phase with such a mammoth program.

“You can also tell yourself that you are tired. Or just that you are ready and still can.” The head actually outsmarts the body. The endorphins released after victories also help. “They push extra. Thanks to our successes, we also believe in it and don’t let ourselves get bored.”

No sleeping problems with Egli

The national player is one of the lucky ones who does not suffer from sleeping problems. Because playing a game almost every day really messes up your sleep rhythm and it takes time to fall asleep after gaming. Still, Egli always sets his alarm the next morning so he doesn’t stay in bed too long and sets up a routine. “For me it is certainly easier than for players with families and children. They will definitely wake up earlier.”

But now the HCD has a completely contradictory schedule: in the next 19 days the team from Davos only has to play three matches, and in the next two weeks they only have to play one.
