Tes Schouten has broken the Dutch record in the 200m breaststroke short course at World Cup competitions in Berlin. With 20.2.89 she swam the eight year old record of Moniek Nijhuis (21.2.16) from the books.
Schouten’s previous personal record, which swam in World Cup competitions in Budapest last year, was more than three seconds slower: 2:24:04. On the long track, Schouten is also the record holder over 100 meters (1.06.92) and 200 meters (2.26.13).
Schouten swam the record in the series, qualifying first for the final later in the evening.
Bodegraafse, 21, finished second in the 100m breaststroke at the 2017 European Junior Championships. A year later, as a 17-year-old, she won the Dutch record for that distance, and thereafter crept ever closer to the international top.
In December 2020, for example, she qualified for the Tokyo Olympics with a Dutch record in the 100 meters. There she finished 25th in the 100m breaststroke. She finished tenth in the 4x100m individual medley.
In August, Schouten won her first medal at an international championship: bronze in the 4x100m individual medley at the European Championships in Rome. In the individual classification, she was seventh in the 100 meters and ninth in the 200 meters.
Shortly after the bronze relay she even cheered on leader Kira Toussaint. “I would have liked to have swum a little harder for these girls tonight,” said Toussaint. Schouten intervened immediately: “You’re doing your best, aren’t you?”
She herself was particularly glad the hard work was over, much to the delight of her teammates. “I guess I haven’t realized it yet, and I’m just glad we’re done. That we’re on vacation.” What had she planned to do in her free time? “Parties! And don’t think about swimming for a while.”
Last week Schouten jumped into the water for the first time at a competition in Aachen. There she won the 200m breaststroke in 2:26.28. She was also the best in the 100 meters.
This record (100 meters breaststroke sprint) is still in the name of Nijhuis with 1.06.63.
