“We prepare in exactly the same way as for a championship match,” explains FCB coach Fabio Celestini before the friendly match against the great FC Bayern. No wonder that St. Jakob Park with around 36,000 fans has been sold out for weeks. In Basel they are looking forward to the match between FCB and FCB.
The team from Munich will approach the test match much more relaxed. The German record champion only travels to Basel on the day of the match and then immediately returns home. The Bavarians do not travel the 400 kilometers in the team bus, but in two private planes. The flight from Oberpfaffenhofen to Basel takes about an hour. A short trip that was actually not planned.
The German record champion had initially announced that it would cancel the training camp in Doha that had been customary in recent years due to the short preparation time until the start of the second half of the season against Hoffenheim (January 12). Instead, coach Thomas Tuchel wanted to spend two days in Bad Ragaz on team building. The test match against FCB was also planned as part of this stay.
But now the U-turn: Instead of traveling to Switzerland for the match against Hoffenheim, they will only then go to the training camp in Portugal (January 14 to 18). A longer trip to Switzerland is now off the table; Bayern travels alone for the match against FCB.
The match is Munich’s only test match before the start of the second half of the season – probably also because Bayern has a full schedule ahead of it after the trip to Portugal. From January 21, there will be three Bundesliga games in six days against Bremen, Union Berlin (catch-up game) and Augsburg.
Despite the huge schedule, Tuchel will probably let his Bayern stars jog. Besides the injured Kingsley Coman, only Min-jae Kim and Noussair Mazraoui are missing. Central defender Kim is in action with South Korea at the Asian Cup, the also recently injured Mazraoui has been nominated by Morocco for the African Cup.
