Therese Johaug has every reason to shine.

“Now you belong to me,” Therese Johaug (35) writes on Instagram. Who does she mean by that? Her newlywed husband Nils Jakob Hoff (38). The former cross-country skiing queen and the rower got married on New Year’s Eve. Exactly two years to the day after the Norwegian sports dream couple announced their engagement, they tied the knot.

“December 31, 2023 will go down in history as one of the most beautiful days of my life!” Johaug writes on Instagram about a selection of snapshots from the exuberant celebration. The two married in Roros, Norway. While Hoff first wore a traditional Norwegian robe and then a tuxedo, Johaug walked down the aisle in a custom-made dress.

To the altar in a dream dress

Johaug describes it as a dress “I’ve always dreamed of.” She found the inspiration for this in the “snow crystals that illuminated the ski slopes for me”. The dress, made of silk, tulle and lace, embroidered with crystals, pearls and glitter, took more than a year to create. After the wedding, the bridal couple continued through the snow to the party location in a sleigh pulled by a Norwegian fjord horse. Johaug changed her outfit and wore a short white dress for the party. She popped the champagne corks together with her husband.

The wedding ends an emotional year for the couple. In mid-May they became parents of a daughter. The career of Johaug (retired in March 2022), who is considered one of the most successful cross-country skiers of all time, was also full of emotions.

“There have been many brutal setbacks. At the same time, there were also fantastic moments,” she writes in her biography, which will be published in 2022. Johaug won 100 World Cup races, became world champion 14 times and won Olympic gold four times. In total, she collected 25 medals at major events. She experienced her absolute low point in October 2016 when she was suspended for 18 months due to a doping violation. (beer)
