She dances, she sings, she seems to be in a trance. Michelle Gisin (30) is once again relying on her traditional musical competition preparation this winter. With headphones in her ears and a helmet on her head, she gets into the competitive mood a few minutes before the start.
“I always hope that I don’t get caught by the TV cameras in these moments,” she says, smiling. It still happens from time to time – it doesn’t matter. The song that Gisin heard in recent weeks is special: “Sarà perché ti amo” by the Italian duo Ricchi e Poveri. Translated it means something like “It will be this way because I love you” and dates from 1981.
A 40 year old Italian hit makes Gisin hot? That’s exactly how it is. Recently it had a resounding effect: she finished third in the slalom in Lienz (Austria). “It’s really funny, especially in the slalom, it makes me laugh,” she says. The reason: the first line of the classic reads: “Che confusione!” (German: What a mess!) before continuing with “Sarà perché ti amo”.
Gisin: “That fits like a glove with slalom, which I had problems with for a long time. With this discipline I hesitate between love and hate – fortunately the switch has finally turned in the right direction again, love dominates again.”
In Kranjska Gora (Sln), Gisin not only wants to shine in the slalom on Sunday, but also wants to take a step forward in the giant slalom on Saturday. It won’t be easy, as she has significantly bigger problems in this field. “First, the performance density in giant slalom is higher than anywhere else for women. Above all, I lose confidence too quickly when something is wrong. I have to work on that.”
After all, Kransjka Gora is a good place for Gisin. Here she achieved two of her three giant slalom podiums. In January 2021, before contracting mononucleosis, she came third and second in northwestern Slovenia.
Will it work again? After a five-day break (“it was almost a holiday”) at home in Riva del Garda (I), the all-rounder prepares for the next serious fight with two enormous training days. One thing is certain: Gisin has had the right music for a good result in Kranjska Gora on her playlist for a long time.
