Just like leaders YB and GC, FC Basel is not considering a trip to the south for nothing. Because the new year starts with a bang for FCB. On Saturday, Bayern Munich will play Hoffenheim in sold-out Joggeli six days before the opening of the Bundesliga. A duel that is also financially lucrative for the residents of Basel.

YB and GC have other reasons for staying in Switzerland. “It would not have been right due to the short Christmas holiday and the short preparation for the restart,” said leader YB, justifying his decision not to make a trip into the heat. The situation is similar with the residents of Zurich. Due to a lack of alternatives, both clubs will only test against Challenge League teams.

Spain, Turkiye, Tunisia and Dubai

The rest of the competition travels to warmer climes. After years in Turkey, the FCZ is preparing this year in Spain, more specifically in Chiclana de la Frontera and Malaga. Saarbrücken, Hannover and HSV are, at least on paper, known opponents of Zurich. Lucerne also travels to the south of Spain. “The players appreciate training on very good fields,” says FCL coach Mario Frick. The alternative for your home would be artificial grass. One of Lucerne’s opponents in the test match is Standard Liège.

St. Gallen also flies to Spain. After the explosion in the executive suite, the first official act of new sports director Roger Stilz is to travel with the team to the ten-day training camp in Murcia on Thursday. For him, it’s mainly about getting to know the staff and the team.

Lugano and Lausanne are also preparing for the second half of the season in Spain, Winterthur in Turkey and Yverdon in Tunisia. With the Mauritania national team, the Vaudois also test against an exotic opponent. Bottom team Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy also completes a training camp – in Ticino. But the thermometer will also drop in the Swiss sun in the coming days.
