This is certainly not how Mathieu Faivre (31) envisioned the start of the new year.
The Olympic bronze medalist from Beijing and two-time world champion 2021 in Cortina d’Ampezzo (giant slalom and parallel race) is no longer on skis for the time being. As the French federation announced, Faivre is out with a broken collarbone. He sustained the injury during training on January 2 in his home country. The 31-year-old will undergo surgery in Lyon on Wednesday.
The injury is another setback for the Frenchman. Since his successes at the major events, things are no longer going the way he wants. In the current season he only achieved 22nd place at the first giant slalom in Alta Badia. And last season he didn’t place in the top ten at all.
Faivre posted an x-ray of his shoulder on Instagram, wrote: “broken collarbone = goodbye” and followed it up with a “happy new year.” Meanwhile, teammates like Adrien Théaux, Clément Noel and Alexis Pinturault are among those wishing well in the comments. But Faivre’s Swiss competitor Loïc Meillard (27) also wishes him only the best: “Get better soon!” (SDA/mou)
