First the good news: after a five-week break due to a foot injury, Cedric Itten (27) is back at the first training of 2024 and looks fresh and alert. In other words: 100% fit!

Amenda won’t be back in the RS for another two weeks

Aurèle Amenda (20) is also there. And this is anything but obvious for two reasons. On the one hand because the central defender is in the RS. But because some graduates of top sports recruits are in training camps, the military seriousness of life for Amenda will not begin again until January 15. One thing is clear: the RS is not an obstacle to an immediate transfer of the player.

And that brings us to reason number two: the player is in high demand! For example, Eintracht Frankfurt, in sixth place in the Bundesliga, is showing concrete interest in Seeländer. But whether the SGE is willing and/or able to pay the ten million francs requested by YB is another matter.

What happens to Nsame?

Jean-Pierre Nsame was also on the field. The top scorer, like Amenda, is also dissatisfied with his playing times. And he also announced this publicly. He has also confirmed contacts with Basel and Servette. If YB wants to see even a cent for the 30-year-old in a transfer, he will have to leave in the winter. The French-Cameroonian’s contract expires next summer. But there will be no transfer within the competition, sports director Steve von Bergen told the “Berner Zeitung” with a clear “That is definitely for us!” confirmed.

Africa Cup confuses the team

It is also a fact: Hessian interest is certainly not the only one. In addition to the long-term injured Kastriot Imeri and the flu-weakened Donat Rrudhani, five players are not at the start of training, four of them potential permanent players: Captain Ali Camara (Guinea), storm rocket Meschack Elia (Democratic Republic of Congo), Ebrima Colley, Saidy Janko (both Gambia) and Miguel Chaiwa (Zambia). They have all been called up for the Africa Cup of Nations and have been in training camps in Africa or the Middle East for several weeks.

And it can be assumed that everyone will also participate in the tournament in Ivory Coast, as the squad size has been increased to 27 players. The final cut will take place on January 3. But all five Berners should make the list of 27. For YB, the absences are a real handicap, because the final of the tournament, which starts on January 13, is not until February 11.

This is four days before YB’s Europa League play-off first leg (round 16) at home to Sporting Lisbon. And by then, five (!) championship rounds have already been played. YB should be happy with its wide roster, even without the Champions League.
