Bad luck in sports, good luck in the family. Two and a half months ago, German giant slalom specialist Stefan Luitz (31) suffered another injury-related setback. Now the former giant slalom winner (2018 in Beaver Creek) gets double motivation on the way back to the World Cup.
On the one hand, the Bavarian native announced the joy of a baby in his family on January 1. “Fourofus” (four of us) he writes over the photo with his wife Sarah Luitz, who holds their first child in one hand and her belly with the other. The two got married in church last June and became parents for the first time in September 2021.
The second good news comes from Christmas. On December 24, the German skier gave herself a gift during follow-up training: “The first time I stood at the gate again, it felt great.” Where there is a comeback, there must also be shadows. And Luitz has experienced this all too often in his professional career.
It was mid-October 2023 while training shortly before the start of the season when he broke his right ankle and suffered a torn syndesmosis. “Probably the unluckiest skier in the world,” headlines the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” against the backdrop of another season that seems to have started before it even started.
The talented skier, who has achieved a total of seven giant slalom podium finishes in his career, has been repeatedly slowed by injuries. He suffered his first ACL tear in 2013 and his second in 2017. Gone were the 2018 Olympics and the dream of forgetting the threader in the final gate with a top time at the 2014 Olympics.
Luitz even had to worry about his only World Cup victory at Beaver Creek 2018 due to a doping war between the World Anti-Doping Agency and the World Ski Association before he was ultimately awarded the victory. But at the moment, luck is on the side of the unlucky skier.
