For few athletes, the year 2023 ended as bitterly as for Marco Schwarz. The Austrian skier started the season as Marco Odermatt’s main opponent. The overall World Cup was the 28-year-old’s big goal.

But then Schwarz fell hard on the Stelvio on December 28. The diagnosis: cruciate ligament rupture and thus the end of the season.

Criticism of the burden on black people

Frustration over the Ösi star’s abrupt departure was quickly followed by criticism. Several experts told Blick that the coaches were responsible. Her accusation: Schwarz wanted too much and no one on the staff stopped him.

Marco “Blacky” Schwarz competed in all downhill, super-G, giant and slalom races this World Cup winter until he was injured. Unlike Odermatt, who does not participate in slalom, for example, Schwarz hardly allows himself any rest breaks. The stress of all the training is so enormous. Former Austrian ski dominator Stephan Eberharter (54) criticizes the ÖSV trainers at Blick: “The trainers have to show an athlete what is and is not possible.”

And Marco Schwarz himself? After the shock of the injury, he withdraws for a few days. On December 31, after recovering from knee surgery, he sent some New Year’s wishes to the fans. And he has no choice but to respond to the criticism of his gigantic seasonal program. Schwarz writes succinctly on Instagram: “To the experts: I would do everything exactly the same.”

Schwarz tore the cruciate ligament in his right leg in a fall. The meniscus was also damaged. Complete healing will take months. The all-rounder should be fit again at the start of the 2024/25 season.
