The initiators of the Winter Olympics in Switzerland are convinced that postponing the Swiss candidacy for 2030 to 2038 is much more of a victory than a defeat. In fact, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has indicated: if Switzerland wants the 2038 Winter Games, it should get them. But to make a triumph out of this is daring.

The IOC’s rejection of the 2030 candidacy is a rejection of the Swiss concept: the commission criticized the decentralized implementation, the non-existent Olympic villages and the lack of political guarantees. The world association is thus cutting exactly the pillars that could make a Swiss candidacy for the Olympic Games a majority: the use of the existing sports infrastructure, refraining from the construction of temporary housing, no major financial risks for the taxpayer. The IOC places heavy obstacles on Switzerland’s democratic path to the so-called sustainable Games.

Moreover: the Olympic plans for 2030 were a surprise coup. The short term awakened dreams and created a sense of optimism. 2038, on the other hand, is still a long way away. The dedication is lost – and the euphoria. 2030 was a unique opportunity, even Olympic promoter Urs Lehmann reiterated that before the IOC decision. He was right. It may be credible that the IOC wants to host the 2038 Winter Games in Switzerland. But the obstacles for Switzerland to want to do this themselves have become much greater.
