Two faces this season: HCD-Aeschlimann declares war on Berra and Genoni

A catch rate of 92.87 percent in the National League and even 93.80 percent in the Spengler Cup so far. HCD goalkeeper Sandro Aeschlimann (29) is having a great season. ‘I try to take it day by day. But I am of course happy with how things are going at the moment,” says the Emmentaler.

Yet there is a blemish in the record: in the national team, Aeschlimann was unable to perform at his usual level for the first time in his career. He has never exceeded a catch rate of 90.5 percent in a season for the national team. And at the Karjala Cup in November in Finland, Aeschlimann had an underground catch rate of 75 percent and was substituted in the match against Sweden (3:4) after a very unfortunate performance when the score was 0:3.

“It’s part of the sport”

But Aeschlimann does not want to talk about a general problem in the national team uniform compared to his HCD performances, saying: “It was especially this one match against Sweden that was unfortunate for me. That something like that happens is part of the sport. But It would of course be better if it had not happened there, or ideally not at all.” But he can’t change it anymore, he can only determine what is now and what will happen in the future and make the best of it, “so that I have a real chance at the World Cup.”

Due to his continued strong HCD performances, Aeschlimann would effectively be the crown prince who would gradually inherit the aging goalkeeping kings Leonardo Genoni (36) and Reto Berra (36) in the Nati goal. But he does not want to be satisfied with just these prospects anyway and declares war on the two icons: “I would like to stand in front of them and will do everything I can to ensure that I get my chance. “I don’t put any pressure on myself, but it is up to me to do my job and the rest is out of my hands.”

First HCD final participation since 2012?

But before this decision is made, Aeschlimann wants to continue to create a sensation at the Spengler Cup with his HCD: “We have set our sights on winning this Spengler Cup and are doing everything we can to achieve that. I hope we can get two more wins after our first two wins.” In the semi-final today at 3:10 PM against Frölunda (on SRF2 and in the live ticker), the hosts will compete in the final for the first time since 2012.
