KNVB cancels new OneLove promotion: “The emphasis is too much on who does and who doesn’t”

Due to the fuss about wearing the OneLove ribbon in professional football last weekend, the KNVB canceled a repeat campaign planned for mid-November. The change was planned as a gesture in the final of the World Cup in Qatar.

“If you play with the OneLove band again within a month, the focus will be on other things than the gesture you want to make,” the KNVB told NOS. “Then you miss your target, which is why you decided not to do that for the time being. Then there is too much emphasis on who does and who doesn’t, when a statement should be thought-provoking.”

Against any form of discrimination

The OneLove campaign in football stands for solidarity and against any form of discrimination. This past weekend, most of the pro soccer captains wore the OneLove ribbon, rainbow pins were worn and rainbow corner flags were raised as a statement as part of International Coming Out Day.

Not all captains supported wearing a rainbow tie. Feyenoord captain Orkun Kökcü refused to wear the ribbon last weekend and Excelsior captain Redouan El Yaakoubi wore an alternative ribbon that read ‘Respect’.

The topic was discussed at Studio Voetbal on Sunday evening.

Invited Discussion: ‘Rejection of Kökçü Rainbow Ribbon Missed Opportunity’

Since September 2022, the various captains of the national teams of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, England, Wales, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands have been playing with the OneLove band.

Van Dijk with the OneLove band at the World Cup

The KNVB has announced that the OneLove campaign will definitely continue and will also be visible at the World Cup in Qatar. There, the Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk wears the belt. Just wait for the FIFA approval.

“We announced that. It’s not banned yet, but it’s not yet approved by FIFA either,” said the KNVB spokesman. “We do not expect any problems and will not speculate further about a possible ban.”
