The competition is amazed: Odermatt is already on course for a world record

Although Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr (32) won the Super-G in Val Gardena shortly before Christmas, he has little hope for the start in Bormio. “If he drives normally, Odermatt will not be beaten in this Super-G!”

A few hours later, the 2021 Super-G and downhill world champion’s prediction turns out to be an absolute hit – because Odermatt doesn’t do anything stupid, he takes 98 hundredths from the second-placed Austrian Raphael Haaser. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Kriechmayr lost 1.31 and 1.45 seconds in third and fourth place respectively. «On the one hand, it is a feast for the eyes to watch the Odi. On the other hand, it hurts a lot if you regularly get burned for more than a second,” Kriechmayr admits.

Another record?

Odermatt’s latest display of his immense skills is synonymous with the 28th World Cup victory of his career and the fourth victory this winter. When the man from Nidwalden improved Hermann Maier’s World Cup points record with 2,042 points last season, you had to assume that this figure would be difficult to beat. But now a new fable seems possible.

Last season, the man from Nidwalden scored 636 points after the first eight races. The 26-year-old still has 636 points after 8 games this winter. And the two-time overall World Cup winner will most likely participate in 21 races up to and including the World Cup final in Saalbach.

“I’m surprised at the start of the season because before this winter I didn’t feel as good as I did a year ago,” Odermatt reveals. «In October I missed a few good training days. And I wasn’t particularly fast during the November camp in Copper Mountain (USA). But fortunately I can usually improve in the races.”

And that is why the Buochser takes home a trophy in almost every race. “My mother is not always happy about it, because she attaches great importance to order,” grins the world champion and Olympic champion. And because every additional trophy disrupts Priska Odermatt’s organizational plan, some of the noble dust collectors have to be moved.

«In my childhood room there are only the trophies and gold medals of the winners. I placed the prizes for second and third place in a display case at my outfitter Stöckli in Malters.” The superstar also celebrates New Year’s Eve outside his parents’ house. “I’m going to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a great group in a holiday home in Engelberg.”
