When Marco Odermatt’s brilliant victory in the Super-G in Bormio was almost certain, the spectators at starting number 30 were again breathtaking: Christof Innerhofer (39) fell at high speed on the Stelvio.
After making a mistake, the 39-year-old flies over the pimple-hard track, crashes into one of the gates and then initially remains almost motionless. Innerhofer has blood on his face, but is mainly holding his leg. The ski oldie must be picked up by helicopter. Now comes Bormio’s first verdict: Innerhofer is suspected of a serious knee injury.
If true, it would likely end the career of the 2011 Super-G world champion – the South Tyrolean is 39 years old and is, along with Adrien Théaux (also 39), the longest-serving World Cup athlete. Innerhofer’s debut was 17 years ago; he took part in his first World Cup competition in November 2006 in the slalom in Levi (Fi).
The helicopter had to be deployed in Bormio the day before for the departure of Marco Schwarz. The Austrian suffered a torn cruciate ligament.
