Reward for a turnaround in the spectacle: that’s why Davos wanted to beat Team Canada so badly

The HCD takes on Team Canada but misses top class chances, suffering a double blow within 100 seconds shortly before the second break and trailing 1:3. The reaction of the people of Davos to this? They really gained momentum again and scored a more than convincing final third with three goals.

Michael Fora started the comeback with the 2:3, Andres Ambühl scored the important equalizer. “It was a beautiful pass from Haapala, all I had to do was push the puck in,” he describes. Capping off this spectacular turnaround were Enzo Corvi, Marc Wieser and Calle Andersson, who completed the passing combination with the winning goal.

What motivated Davos after the 1:3 deficit? “We just wanted to try everything to get a day off,” said Captain Ambühl. This group win now gives the HCD a direct qualification for the semi-finals on Saturday. Ambühl explains why this break is so important based on last year: “We played four games in four days. In the end we lacked strength.” As a reminder: the team from Davos lost the semi-finals to the eventual tournament winner Ambri in 2022 with 0:5.

To launch such a comeback you obviously need more than just the prospect of a day without games. «The belief in it. We never gave up,” said Ambühl, “coming back like this shows the character of a team.”

Incidentally, the 40-year-old is the only player in the current team with a Spengler Cup win to his name. In 2006, he defeated Team Canada 3-2 in the final with the HCD – after trailing 0-2. The winning goal was scored by 23-year-old Andres Ambühl. “It’s a nice memory,” said the Davos resident, “but first we focus on the semi-finals.”
