Bad news for Sanne Vermeer again. The judoka has been out of action for about six months because of a knee injury she sustained at the last World Championships in Uzbekistan.
She was also absent for a long time in 2019, back then with a thigh injury. That cost her the chance of an Olympic ticket. And in April she had to forego the European Championships because of a double-folded meniscus.
In Dutch judo, 24-year-old Vermeer is now the best in her weight class (up to 63 kilograms) after Juul Franssen’s exit. She won bronze at the 2021 World Championships in Budapest, but the Olympic ticket was already for Franssen. At the last World Cup last week in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Vermeer was eliminated in the third round.
On the last day of the World Championships in the fight for bronze in the Nations Cup, things went completely wrong for Vermeer. Against Maya Goshen from Israel, she suddenly grabbed her knee and had to retire.
It now appears that Vermeer will need surgery on her meniscus. It is not yet known how severe her cruciate ligament damage is.
Watch below a recap of the last day of the World Cup with Sanne Vermeer’s retirement.
Vermeer will miss December’s Masters tournament due to her injury. There are a lot of points to collect in the fight for a ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris.
This tournament will be held in 2024. Vermeer seems to have enough time to qualify, after all.
