Amy Baserga’s eyes light up when she is asked about her plans between Christmas and New Year. Together with Swiss Ski teammate Sebastian Stalder, she received an invitation to the World Team Challenge, the traditional biathlon event in Schalke. “It’s going to be something great,” the 23-year-old says, laughing.

She knows: a big spectacle awaits her. Gelsenkirchen’s football temple, the Veltins Arena, will be transformed into a cross-country cauldron again on Thursday. The event, which is celebrating its 20th edition this year, impressively underlines why biathlon is the number one winter sport in Germany. “Running and gunning in front of 40,000 fans – that will be a completely different adrenaline experience,” says Baserga.

Your mixed team partner is Sebastian Stalder (25), the Swiss biathlete who achieved the best men’s result so far this winter with a fifth place in Östersund. The competition also has top cracks; Norway, for example, has Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold (27) and Sturla Holm Laegreid (26). France relies on Julia Simon (27) and Fabien Claude (28). The women each run four laps on the shortened World Cup course, the men run five laps, alternating between standing and lying down. The winning duo will be determined via a mass start and a pursuit race (live on ARD, from 5:55 PM).

Reasonable prize money

“It’s going to be crazy with all the fans,” said Baserga, “I’m really happy – it’s all about having fun there.” Although: Prestige and the prize money of 28,000 euros should not be missed either.

The woman from Schwyz, who reached the World Cup podium twice last season with Niklas Hartweg in the single mixed relay, emphasizes: “It is a huge honor to be able to participate here.” She brings her family as well as her boyfriend Robin Janser: “It’s great to get such an opportunity. And the timing is right too – in a season without the Olympic Games and without a home world championship (2025 in Lenzerheide) just around the corner.”
