Peter Mueller scratches his knives before the start of the tournament. He finally wants to play again. The American striker is one of Ambri’s reinforcement players at the Spengler Cup. However, in the three weeks leading up to the tournament in Davos, he only trained. The reason: at the end of November he had to leave Vitkovice; the Czech club canceled the 35-year-old’s contract overnight.

What happened? Mueller shrugs. He doesn’t want to add more fuel to the fire. Because the divorce did not take place without background noise. Due to the continued poor performance, there were player meetings with the club management, he says, and he asked questions. Vitkovice has slipped to the bottom of the table. Mueller ends his conversation by terminating the contract.

Talking about him disappoints Mueller

It has been circulating in the Czech media that the winger complained about the quality of the team’s centres. On the club’s homepage, sporting director Roman Simicek is quoted as saying: “Peter Mueller has indicated several times that he is dissatisfied with his time here in Vitkovice and with life in Ostrava lately. And he said he wanted the team to leave.” What does Mueller himself say about it? “There are always two sides, and each sees it differently.”

It was his second season at Vitkovice. Before that, the former first-round draft pick (2006 by Phoenix) played four years at Brno. He had settled and felt comfortable with his family in the Czech Republic. Now he is forced to close this chapter. Even with watery eyes. What particularly disappoints him: After his departure, he was verbally followed up.

Team captain Dominik Lakatos also said on the club’s website: “We are now in a situation where we need players to fight for Vitkovice and give the best of themselves on the ice so that we can finally get out of the crisis. If someone doesn’t want that, there is simply no place here.” Mueller admits, “When I found out, it really hurt.”

His trademark: a dark visor

But now he’s looking ahead. He is grateful to Ambri for this opportunity. “It’s a win-win situation. It’s a great opportunity for me. I can play against top teams and even for the defending champions.” Of course, there is also his desire to find accommodation at a club in this country. Because Mueller knows Switzerland very well from his two years at EHC Kloten (2013 to 2015).

Before that, he played his last season in the NHL (Florida Panthers). At that time he turned down a trial contract. Not again in 2016, but he didn’t make the Boston Bruins team and had to play for their farm team in the AHL. Since then he has only played in Europe. A serious concussion gave the former top talent in the NHL a reputation as a vulnerable player.

The effects of the concussion have created a trademark: Mueller is known for playing with a blacked-out visor on his helmet. In the past, he had to get special permission to do this in all competitions. This need is now known everywhere and he takes his special visor with him everywhere.
