Who doesn’t know it? Whether it is raclette, fondue chinoise, roasts or other dishes, in many places people like to eat a lot during Christmas and New Year. Even footballers, who would otherwise have to pay close attention to their diet, will probably indulge a little more than normal, but there are limits.

At Borussia Dortmund they have zero tolerance in that regard. Defender Thomas Meunier (32) recently announced to the Belgian broadcaster ‘RTBF’ that there are fines for BVB professionals due to weight gain: “The price is known: a fine of 1,000 euros per kilo won.” But for a certain brand it can even cost 1000 euros per 100 grams.

BVB professional was once threatened with a fine of 10,000 euros

The Belgian national player, who has played for black and yellow since 2020, gives an example where a player was fined 10,000 euros. He doesn’t reveal who it was, saying only, “It was said, ‘You have a week, and if you lose the pounds, we’ll reduce the penalty.'” And the person actually met the goal and so did the fines bypassed.

Before the BVB players were released for the Christmas holidays this year, they had to weigh themselves and will do so again at the start of training on January 2. They have a difficult second half of the season ahead, they are currently not in a Champions League place in the Bundesliga – that is the minimum target. (ch)
