The Christmas season doesn’t just mean family gatherings and presents. As is known, the festival of love also means food. Unhealthy food. This does not apply to Gabi ‘Balboa’ Timar (37). The professional boxer will fight for the IBO Intercontinental light flyweight title (up to 49kg) on December 26 on Swiss Boxing Day in Bern (live on Blick TV) and must maintain her fighting weight.

“It’s difficult. Everyone celebrates and eats, while I’m not allowed to eat anything,” Timar tells Blick. The weigh-in for the fight takes place on December 25, the day after Christmas Eve. Because the weight has to be just right, the born eats Romanian nothing the day before, except maybe something small like soup.

Timar has to pay a lot of attention to her weight during battle preparation; she steps on the scale four times a day. She tries to eat five meals a day, three hot and two snacks. “I need energy and burn my calories during training.” But she didn’t want to count the calories; she knew what her body needed and how it responded to certain things.

Home alone at Christmas

Blick meets Timar after her training in the Kabar restaurant, right next to the Basel boxing club. Here she eats the legendary meatloaf every Thursday with other members of the club. During fight week she no longer has to go without, she clearly enjoys the piece of meat with mashed potatoes. For the boxer it’s like an early Christmas dinner, because after that there isn’t much to celebrate.

Their fight completely ruins Christmas. Timar’s family celebrates abroad, she remains alone in Switzerland. «For me, eating and relaxing are part of Christmas. And I can’t relax before a fight because I’m too much in my tunnel.” Although it was difficult for her to leave the festival behind, she didn’t want to do this to her family or herself.

No opponent analysis

The sacrifice will bear fruit on December 26. Gabi Timar (10 professional fights, 9 wins, 1 defeat) is looking to win her second title against 20-year-old Thai Pimchanok Thepjanda (11 professional fights, 8 wins, 3 defeats) after winning the EBU European Championship title in April. It must be the next step in her career and bring Timar closer to her big goal: becoming world champion.

She doesn’t know much about her opponent, who is seventeen years younger than her: “I don’t analyze my opponents, those details are unimportant to me. I just concentrate on my fight.” Analyzing is the job of her trainer Angelo Gallina. But for Timar it is clear: “I am going to win.”

If she succeeds, she already has a plan for dinner: “We always eat hamburgers after the fights,” says Timar, laughing. The burger should taste exceptionally good, especially after missing Christmas.
