Christmas card with clear message: FIFA threatens to suspend Brazil

After Brazilian federation president Ednaldo Rodrigues was deposed by a civil court, the world football association Fifa sent the national umbrella organization CBF a Christmas card with clear messages. The December 24 letter forbids the association from further interfering with the management structure and, in the event of violations, clearly threatens to immediately suspend the Seleçao and domestic clubs from all competitions.

A committee with FIFA delegates and representatives of the continental association Conmebol wants to get a picture on the ground of the leadership crisis that led to the resignation of Rodrigues due to alleged irregularities in his election in March 2022 in the second week of January. The world association views the ruling of a court in Rio de Janeiro as interference by state bodies in the affairs of its member associations, which is not permitted under its own statutes.

FIFA therefore demonstratively addressed the letter to CBF Secretary General Alcino Reis, who was also deposed on December 7, and not to Jose Perdiz, who was appointed by the court as an interim solution. At the insistence of the tribunal, the interim president had prepared in recent days to call new elections.
