The Austrian Bundesliga has imposed several fines on Rapid Vienna for excessive use of fireworks.

Pyros are an integral part of the fan curves in Swiss football. The stadium speaker will always point out that please do not let off fireworks. That does not alter the fact that there is a lot of tension in the stadiums every weekend.

The Austrian Bundesliga introduced a novelty two months ago when Rapid Vienna was punished for the first time with a fine and points deduction due to pyrotechnics used by fans in the top match against Sturm Graz (2:2). This happened because their fans repeatedly set off excessive amounts of fireworks, leading to a twelve-minute stoppage in the match.

Rapid Vienna appealed the verdict. It believed that the measure to deduct points from a team for the first time due to fan misconduct was excessive.

Point deductions may be reduced

The league has now announced its final verdict. The fine of 50,000 euros will therefore be maintained. The traditional Austrian club cannot avoid points deduction either. However, Rapid Vienna has the opportunity to reduce their losses from three points to one for next season.

To this end, the team will have two extensive workshops with representatives of the club and said fan clubs until February 28, 2024 at the latest, where presentations will take place on the correct handling of pyrotechnics, possible hazards and the relevant legal basis. as well as the prevention of violence. It will be interesting to see what effect the league’s crackdown will have in the coming weeks and months. (Gentlemen)
