A scene occurred on Thursday evening in the highest German ice hockey league, the DEL, which is now being hotly debated in our neighboring country.

Before the Straubing Tigers won 3-1 against the Schwenninger Wild Wings, Schwenningen goalkeeper Eriksson – probably unconsciously – loosened the goal from its anchorage and raised it slightly. Just at this moment, Straubing player JC Lipon (30) seizes his opportunity and puts the puck on goal. The Canadian shoots under the goal post and into the goal. The hit counts and shortly afterwards the game starts again.

Only then will the TV images shed light on the darkness. You can see that Lipon never put the puck in the goal properly. “I felt like that could have happened,” the wily Lipon said during the first third break on MagentaTV. “We just tried to get back on track as quickly as possible so they couldn’t take the goal back.”

Because no one – not even Schwenningen’s coaching staff – noticed the accident, the video evidence was not used. “We thought: OK, that’s a goal,” said Straubing coach Tom Pokel, who is not angry about the mistake. “Mistakes happen,” says Pokel.

The Wild Wings would have had plenty of time to turn the game around anyway. The phantom goal came in the 19th minute.
