FCB boss Degen wants his own stadium: ‘I would move from Joggeli immediately’

The St. Jakob Park cannot be financed by FC Basel in the current cooperative structure. The financially strapped club will receive negative news this year despite lucrative player sales, as president David Degen said in an interview.

“I would leave the stadium. Immediately,” Degen said in an interview with CH Media published on Thursday. According to him, an own stadium with 25,000 seats would be the best solution for FCB. In the current cooperative structure, the stadium absorbs all of the club’s ticket and catering revenue.

According to Degen, the state-owned company “Joggeli” is the only other option. The FCB would contribute a “moderate amount” of up to one million francs per year. According to Degen, politicians would have to make progress for such a solution. For the future of the club, it would be desirable for Basel-Stadt and Baselland to reach an agreement quickly.

Investors are not a problem

As of today, foreign investors are not an option. The club chairman is also critical of the sale of the stadium name. Part of a sponsor’s income would go to the cooperative. “Money would end up in a structure that does not work that way.”

There are also still unanswered questions surrounding the 2025 Women’s European Championship. The club is threatening extra costs because of the European Championship, according to Degen. There is a need for consultation between UEFA, the city and the club. ‘It has to work for us. If that is not the case, I will personally ensure that the door of the stadium remains closed,” said Degen. (SDA)
