The European Championships next summer will probably take place without Thibaut Courtois (31). The goalkeeper of the Belgian national team declared a forfeit against Sporza six months before the start of the tournament. “There will be no European Championship for me due to my injury,” explains the Real goalkeeper, who has been suffering from a torn cruciate ligament for months.
«If I’m lucky, I’ll return to the field in May. But even then I could never be 100 percent ready for a big tournament,” he continues. In the summer he will therefore limit himself to a role as a supporter of the “Red Devils”. “I have to put my pride aside and will therefore simply be a fan in June.”
There has been talk for some time about tensions between the star goalkeeper and Belgian national coach Domenico Tedesco (38). Because Courtois was stripped of his captaincy before the European Championship qualifier against Austria (1-1) in June, he left the Belgian camp in protest. Courtois has now apologized for this episode. “It was a wrong decision to leave after the match against Austria. I would like to apologize to the team and especially to the fans.”
Yet the Real goalkeeper emphasizes that the captaincy was not decisive in his sudden departure. In fact, he felt disrespected by coach Tedesco throughout the move. “The national coach did not speak to me once that week. The fact that I no longer felt appreciated by the association and the coach caused something to explode in me,” he explains.
The relationship between him and the coach is still very tense. The goalkeeper left an unanswered message from Tedesco after Courtois tore his cruciate ligament. Yet a permanent dismissal from the national team is not an option. “The door is certainly not closed for me. However, I know that I have to continue to focus on Real Madrid this season.” (sbe)
