And Fabio Celestini is the right man to achieve this goal. Rarely has he seen a coach in Switzerland who prepares so meticulously. “This is unique. These kinds of things usually only happen abroad. I am very impressed by his work, because in the end every detail is crucial.”

The FCB hospital raises questions

The numerous injuries are not a detail, but a warning sign. Eleven players are out against the FCL. “With a number like that, we have to wonder if we are doing something wrong.” One reason for this could be the many coaching changes: “Because the players want to show themselves in training and perhaps want to be too fast.” But the cause will be investigated in the winter, says Degen: “I don’t think the many injuries are a coincidence.”

The fact that you go into the winter break with a good feeling despite being in the hospital is mainly thanks to FC Luzern. He takes advantage of opportunities while FCB takes the lead out of nowhere. Degen speaks of a happy victory. And that he is looking forward to Christmas with his family.

The 40-year-old has decided not to do an annual evaluation. Because he could ‘write a book about’ what happened. The highlight was the semi-final in the Conference League against Florence. But the negative experiences would far outweigh the negative ones. Greetings from three coaching changes.

But now Degen speaks of continuity and steadfastness. And at the same time, an analysis and selection change will take place in the winter: “We will test everything, leave no stone unturned, correct mistakes from the summer and bring in one or two players.”

So that Celestini has more power in the second half of the season. However, Degen does not give his coach “carte blanche” despite a good record (5 wins in 8 games). “We live in a performance society. If it doesn’t work out, someone has to make a decision.”
