Congratulations, Yann Sommer: our national team goalkeeper turns 35!

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 fmXrkB”>

This Sunday our national football goalkeeper celebrates his 35th anniversary. It was certainly no coincidence that little Yann became a goalkeeper, because his father Daniel was already between the posts for the Zurich first division club Küsnacht in the 1970s. In the photo Yann is about one and a half years old.

Bucharest, June 28, 2021, European Championship round of 16: in play against France There is a penalty shootout – Yann Sommer finally becomes a legend. When Kylian Mbappé takes the decisive penalty, Sommer feels the right corner, dives to the right and deflects it spectacularly with his left hand. The joy afterwards knows no bounds. Thanks to his save, Switzerland qualified for the quarter-finals.

In the Spring 1996 Yann Sommer won his first title as a football goalkeeper. He won a tournament in Zürich-Unterstrass with the F-Juniors of FC Herrliberg. As a reward, little Yann in the blue goalkeeper jersey received a trophy and a medal.

Yann Sommer wins the title

1 Swiss champion 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014
Yann Sommer and FCB – that was a good fit. Between 2011 and 2014 he became champion four times in a row with the red-blue team. With Basel he also reached the Champions League three times. In total he played 170 games for Basel.

2 Swiss Cup winners in 2007 and 2012
Compared to his four SM titles, it is almost a modest return, because with FCB he was ‘only’ a two-time cup winner. The first time in 2007 (against Lucerne) he was a substitute, and in 2012 he won again against Lucerne on penalties.

3 German champions 2023
Much – no, very, very much – has been written about his six months at Bayern Munich. Some experts concluded that he failed there. But the fact is: Sommer became German champion with Bayern.

4 Liechtenstein Cup winners 2008
We don’t know what this title means to him. During his time at Vaduz, he was officially crowned winner of the Liechtenstein Cup in 2008. In the final, Vaduz won 4-0 against Balzers, but Sommer did not play.

5 Swiss Footballers of the Year 2016, 2018, 2021
Sommer has already been named Credit Suisse Men’s Player of the Year three times. Only Nati striker Alex Frei has previously won this individual prize three times.
