Henriksen’s interview ended up in the team chat of the FCSG stars: FCZ pride made the St. Gallen team hot

Bitchy St. Gallen against FCZ: FCSG captain Lukas Görtler (r.) goes into an aggressive duel with Zurich’s Fabio Daprelà.

FC St. Gallen remains the ultimate home power in the Super League. There was also a trio in the ninth match on home field in Kybunpark. Wow. The Espen have equaled Basel’s starting record; FCB also won their first nine home games twenty years ago.

In the last match before the winter break, St. Gallen defeated FCZ in a duel for second place. The crazy thing: it is very possible that it was also the opposing coach who made the Espen a little more enthusiastic for the last game than they already are during their home games.

What happened? FCZ coach Bo Henriksen gave an interview on the club’s own website the day before the match, in which he sounded quite bold towards St. Gallen. The Dane verbally handed out a whole series of swipes towards Eastern Switzerland. «St. Gallen doesn’t like playing against us. “They always change their system fifteen times because they can’t control us,” Zurich said.

Görtler posted the interview in the St. Gallen team chat

And further: “I’m pretty sure we’ll get a good result because we know what to do tactically against their deliberately chaotic play. It will be half a home game for us. 2500 FCZ fans are coming. I don’t think St. Gallen have ever had to play in front of so many away fans, despite their many home wins. We want to win and disrupt their party.”

Oops! Henriksen was just as enthusiastic about the game the day before as he wanted to see his players in Kybunpark. But as became clear after Zurich’s second defeat in four days with the very weak first half, the Dane’s fresh tone turned into an own goal.

Because the statements were recorded in the Espen cabin. “I saw the interview and then immediately put it in the team chat,” said captain Lukas Görtler after the match with a smile when asked by SonntagsBlick whether Henriksen had warmed the St. Gallen team with his interview. Görtler: “I thought it was a bit arrogant. But it’s up to him how he deals with it. I don’t think any of the points he mentioned actually happened. So we are the deserved winners and everything is fine.”

Henriksen comes closest with his predictions when it comes to fans. The Zurich Annex is actually extremely loud. The approximately 2,500 FCZ fans also help St. Gallen achieve a milestone: a record number of visitors in Eastern Switzerland. Never before have so many people watched an FCSG home match as against Zurich.

Thanks to FCZ fans, a new attendance record

There are two reasons for this. To create more space in the guest sector, the 1,000 seats were removed, increasing the capacity to almost 2,000 standing places. The Kybun Park now has 20,029 places instead of the previous 19,200. And because the FCZ is currently playing with its always extremely large number of traveling fans, the new capacity is immediately utilized – for the first time, more than 20,000 people are present live at an Espen home match.

The record crowd will not see an exciting performance from St. Gallen. But the lead at halftime is well deserved. FCZ then responded after a reading from Henriksen during the break (“I could have replaced nine or ten players”), but goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi secured the ninth home win of the season with his save on a Daprelà header.

And what does Henriksen say about his interview that made his opponent hot? ‘I just say what I think. Apparently it had an effect on someone…”
