Will he double in Engelberg?: Deschwanden wants to build on his success

Gregor Deschwanden (32) sailed no less than 146.5 meters in Klingenthal, Germany, last Sunday. A performance that earned him second place and the first podium place of his career. “That gave a real boost to self-confidence,” says the Lucerne resident. Self-confidence that will do him good for the World Cup match in Engelberg. “I now know that if I make my corrections correctly, I can reach the podium. That makes the whole thing a little more relaxed.”

He was also able to deal well with the many ‘positive obligations’, as Deschwanden calls the increased media attention after his stage debut. Even though the great interest in him is quite new. “That’s what happens when you can suddenly ski a lot better,” he says, laughing. “But the attention is something positive.”

Problems with the Engelberg ski jump

After qualifying on Friday, in which Deschwanden finished in twelfth place, the Lucerne must go one step further if he wants to build on his success in Engelberg. It won’t be easy, because the Gross-Titlis ski jump is not exactly one of his favorites: “The ski jump and I haven’t really found each other yet. I’ve always had some problems here.”

With the new head coach Rune Velta, he has to go through the books again after qualifying. “We compare what he sees and what I feel. So far this winter we have found a very good solution several times. Hopefully we will find them again this time.”
