On Monday, the Croatian league officially confirmed the death of former professional footballer Ivan Celikovic (†35). No information is given about the cause of death; the league only speaks of a “sudden death”. The news comes just a month after the tragic death of ex-FCZ professional Raphael Dwamena († 28), who had a heart defect.

Most recently, Celinkovic worked at a football academy. He made a name for himself in his home country through his long presence as a left back in the top Croatian league, the HNL. He played a total of 143 games for Lokomotiva Zagreb and NK Inker, which according to transfermarkt.de is 10,443 minutes.

Celikovic was under contract with Lokomotiva Zagreb from 2020 to 2022. His time overlaps with that of ex-FCZ gem Roko Simic (20), who comes from Lokomotiva’s youth team and made the jump to the first team in the summer of 2020 before moving to Salzburg the following year and being loaned to the FCZ until the summer. “Rest in peace,” Simic wrote on Instagram.

In parallel with his work at the football academy in Cilipi, Celikovic played for the local club NK Konavljanin. The club mourns: “He was always happy, there was a good atmosphere at the club and the place.” Celikovic has left his mark at the highest level in Croatian football until the summer of 2022. (str)
