Fly, Sina, Fly!: Home premiere for ski jumper Arnet

Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden, on a winter day in 2012. Somewhere in a snowy garden, children are having fun. They build a ski jump from a pile of snow so they can ski over it. They copy their great role models. Stars like Didier Cuche, Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn are her heroes.

But then there is little Sina Arnet. Before she drives away, she shouts loudly: “Simon Ammann!” and imagines himself flying over the pile of snow as gracefully as the four-time Olympic champion.

So you can roughly imagine the story that Sina Arnet tells in the conversation. The Engelberg resident is now an adult. The 18-year-old no longer knows why Simon Ammann left such an impression on her. “Probably because I saw him jump with my parents at the World Championships in Engelberg.” In any case, the impression was lasting. Arnet is now a ski jumper herself and made her World Cup debut in March 2022.

Together with Emely Torazza (19) and Rea Kindlimann (21), she is one of three Swiss ski jumpers who will sail over the Gross-Titlis ski jump at the Women’s World Cup premiere in Engelberg on Thursday. The expectations of the sports student are enormous: with the competition just around the corner, another dream comes true: “When I started playing sports, I really wanted to be able to jump off this jump one day. The fact that a competition is now taking place here is very nice!”

Engelberg as a “huge opportunity”

Arnet describes it as valuable that the women have also been jumping at a World Championships in Switzerland since this year. Because women are still in the shadows of men. The young ski jumper notices this again and again in everyday life: “People often react with surprise and amazement when they discover that I am a ski jumper. Many people do not know that women also practice this sport. After that, people always think it’s cool.”

Arnet expects that the World Cup at home will bring more attention to the entire sport. “People just need to see that there are also female ski jumpers in Switzerland. Of course not as successful as Simon Ammann. But we are here, we are there.”

Arnet is still at the beginning of her career. She can approach this season relaxed, because there are no major events. “It’s a huge opportunity to gain experience or try something out. I can really use that now.”
