Ard de Graaf, general manager of SC Cambuur, sat at Henk de Jong’s kitchen table on Tuesday and the men finally came to a common conclusion. “This has to stop now.”
Finally, 58-year-old De Jong’s health problems have returned, making coaching at top-flight SC Cambuur simply unfeasible.
“It hits hard because Henk is a colleague of ours, the face of the club. If he quits for a reason like that, it’s a bitter laugh,” De Graaf replies.
This means that Cambuur is suddenly there for four competitive games without a coach before the long winter break. Assistants Pascal Bosspoelt and Martijn Barto will do the honors for now.
Disappointment with De Jong’s immediate exit will continue to dominate Leeuwarden for a while. “The fact that it still has to end like this is a very bad scenario,” says De Graaf.
“But the club is going on, Henk is going on. He is now recovering and may return in a different role. Still, it’s a very uncomfortable day.”
Cambuur take on FC Twente, Feyenoord, NEC and arch-rivals sc Heerenveen before the winter break.
In the meantime, many professional clubs have announced that they are shocked by the news via social media. They also empathize with De Jong, as does Heerenveen.
