Besides the German Emma Aicher (20), she is the greatest downhill talent in the world: Delia Durrer (21). And the Nidwalden native delivers another example of her talent in St. Moritz GR. «Delia has great potential. But we don’t push too hard. A career is decided at the end, not at the beginning,” says Walter Reusser, CEO of Swiss Ski.

With 21st place, Durrer achieved her best result in her career in the Super-G in the Engadine. The next day she finished 19th in the downhill – she had only been better once before (13th in Lake Louise). “I’m satisfied, even though after the races you always have the feeling that there was more to it,” she says.

“I used to be boisterous”

In fact, Durrer is still in 7th place in the second split on the descent. She would have been the best Swiss woman at the finish – but loses some time on the steep slope.

That’s not bad. No longer? “I used to be impetuous and wanted to show what I could do as quickly as possible. But I have learned to channel my emotions,” she says. Yet even today it is not funny if she loses four seconds, Durrer adds with a smile.

These times are a thing of the past. The excellent pianist (“Music is my great balance”) lost her horns during the World Cup and is feeling increasingly comfortable at the World Cup. “Now I want to work forward step by step.”

100 questions, 100 answers

If you look at the list of the best Swiss speed riders, Durrer is by far the youngest. Lara Gut-Behrami (32), Priska Nufer (31), Joana Hählen (31), Michelle Gisin (30) and Corinne Suter (29) are in the latter part of their careers – in complete contrast to her.

«Despite this, Delia confirmed to me that she feels very comfortable in this team. She has had 100 questions and always received answers. “And that despite the fact that there is almost a generation of skiers between her and the others,” says Hählen.

“I think Delia is great”

Hählen was also Durrer’s roommate. The Bernese woman says: “I think Delia is great, so well positioned and interested. We get along very well,” says the Bernese woman.

Next weekend in Val d’Isère (Friday) Durrer already wants to get closer to the best in the world – there is no one who would not trust her to achieve even more good results.
