Tie instead of starting number. On Sunday our sports stars will look chic instead of sweaty: Sports Awards in the Hallenstadion, live on SRF 1. Fabienne Gyr and Rainer Maria Salzgeber will host the evening.
It is not exactly unlikely that at the end of the gala the same duo will triumph again as last year: sprint top Mujinga Kambundji won in the women’s race, top skier Marco Odermatt won in the men’s race.
Because the man from Nidwalden won his second major crystal ball in an even more dominant manner than last year, his competitors will probably have a hard time again. Odermatt will be challenged by Simon Ehammer, Jason Joseph (both athletics), Nino Schurter (mountain bike), Andri Ragettli (ski freestyle) and wrestler Samuel Giger.
The skiing high-flyer has won his third successive Swiss Athlete of the Year award – not even tennis maestro Roger Federer has achieved such a triple at the Sports Awards. Not least because he lost to motorcycling world champion Tom Lüthi in 2005.
The women’s race, which has a premiere, seems to be more open. The Kambundji family has two candidates. In addition to sprinter Mujinga, her sister Ditaji is also among the candidates for the main elections for the first time. As well as cyclist Marlen Reusser, the ski duo Lara Gut-Behrami and Jasmin Flury and Mathilde Gremaud (ski freestyle).
The TV audience determines a third of the outcome via televoting. Another third comes from surveys among top athletes themselves, and the third third comes from the sports editors of the Swiss media.
In addition to the main election with the athlete of the year, the winners are chosen in four other categories, as well as the prize for young talent ‘Best Talent’.
