Who will be the big figure in St. Moritz?: Gisin is the fastest Swiss woman in training, but she sees others ahead

Not very stylish: Lara Gut-Behrami in the second training. But the image is deceptive. The Ticino native is one of the most popular candidates for victory.

Many skiers from the World Cup entourage of men may look at St. Moritz with envy these days. In the Engadine there is pure sunshine, there is no wind and the racing track is perfect. “It’s a dream,” the Swiss said in unison after the second training session. “And now that the slopes have opened, things are going a little faster everywhere,” says Corinne Suter (29).

The Olympic champion finished in 10th place, 81 hundredths behind the best in training, Nina Ortlieb (27, Austria). This is no cause for alarm. Suter proved last year that she had found the key to the Corviglia: she finished third in the descent. Michelle Gisin (30) considers Suter to be one of the most popular candidates for Saturday. “Together with Sofia,” she adds.

By this she means Sofia Goggia (31) – the Italian is considered a specialist for the Corviglia. We remember: last year she broke two metacarpals in the first race, rode to Milan (It) with cloak-and-dagger surgery, underwent surgery and still won the day after.

“Lara is a brilliant Super-G rider”

After finishing 4th the day before, Gisin is the fastest Swiss woman with 6th place – ahead of the once again strong Delia Durrer (21), who is in 9th place. But Gisin sees himself as an outsider. “Racing and training are two different things.”

Your tip for the two Super-Gs? Gisin doesn’t have to think about it for long: she trusts Lara Gut-Behrami (32). “She had a sensational start to the huge season. And we know she is a brilliant super-G rider.” In the second training, Gut-Behrami finished 28th (+1.55 seconds).

By the way: the imperial weather in St. Moritz should be over by Friday. The clouds are gathering and it will probably snow, even if just a little. In any case, the wind does not have to be a problem.
