The rugby world is being hit by a huge wave of lawsuits: 295 former players are taking legal action against the Rugby World Federation and the national associations of England and Wales.
The accusation: they allegedly did nothing to better protect the players’ health. This mainly concerns head injuries. Attacks to the head are prohibited. Yet head injuries occur again and again in rugby, which can lead to dementia after a career.
One of the affected players is Andrew Coombs. The Welshman was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 39. Doctors even suspect he has chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The brain disease, known from boxing and American football, can only be diagnosed after death.
“The diagnosis is devastating, but answers many questions that have bothered me for so long,” Coombs writes on X about his illness. “She is a huge burden on my relationship and my happiness.”
His co-plaintiffs mainly include players who were active shortly after the turn of the millennium. A time when rugby sport was professionalized and the pressure increased. The first hearings in the mega-trial took place last week.
“You have to question the people who were and are responsible for our health risks,” says Coombs. (cmu)
