DNA research has shown that a wolf was responsible for the death of several sheep on the Blaseberg in the city of Zug. Relatively faint tracks initially pointed to a dog.

Early on Saturday morning, November 18, 2023, several injured sheep were found in a pasture in the Blaseberg area of ​​the city of Zug. At the scene, Zug police, game wardens and a veterinarian found an animal that was already dead; 13 others had to be rescued due to bites and cuts. The tear patterns found at the scene and the low bite force pointed to a dog as the culprit. However, a wolf could not be completely ruled out. Therefore, the Bureau of Forests and Wildlife informed animal owners about the possible presence of wolves through an SMS alert service.

It was probably a young wolf

In addition, several DNA samples were taken from the sheep’s bite sites and sent to the Laboratoire de Biology de la Conservation de l’Université de Lausanne for examination. This investigation showed that the sheep had been killed by a wolf. The laboratory was unable to provide any information about the wolf’s origins. However, it is believed that the rather weak wounds with little bite force came from a young wolf that had recently left a pack.

To date, no further incidents indicating the presence of wolves have been reported in the canton of Zug. (An)
