Highlighted by the referee?: BVB coach Terzic explodes in a TV interview

BVB coach Edin Terzic sees his team falling behind.

Dortmund and Leverkusen drew 1-1 on Sunday. In the eyes of BVB coach Edin Terzic (41), poor decisions by referee Daniel Siebert (39) prevented his team from victory. “I don’t want to talk about the referee today,” Terzic told DAZN after the match. But then a very angry speech starts about exactly this.

After the final whistle, Terzic storms towards Siebert and complains vehemently. “I clearly told him my opinion about the penalty situation surrounding Karim Adeyemi.” What is meant is a scene in the 73rd minute where Adeyemi starts dribbling into the penalty area and falls after light contact. Siebert’s whistle remains silent and the VAR does not turn on either – causing Terzic to explode.

“Not fair”

“That’s what completely upsets me, because it’s not fair. The penalties that are being called against us, both nationally and internationally, are disproportionate to what happened here today.” What is missing is a clear line, says Terzic. «What is a fine and what is not? We discuss the VAR every time , now we have it – who used it today? WHO? Nobody!”

“It’s always about Karim Adeyemi, who is so fast and dribbles at 30 km/h in this situation. And that contact is enough. That is my clear opinion. That is why I do not want and cannot defend the referee.”

Adeyemi discredited as the Swallow King?

For Dortmund, the decision not to award a penalty also has to do with the referees’ reservations about Adeyemi. Sports director Sebastian Kehl (43) makes it clear: “What is important for me is that the referees do not get the impression that if Karim Adeyemi goes into the penalty area, it is not a penalty. I’m just asking for an objective assessment of the scene.”

DAZN expert Michael Ballack (47), on the other hand, judges the contact as “not enough” for a penalty. Terzic refutes this with a list of several scenes from previous games where decisions were made differently in what he saw as similar situations.

Referee gives explanation after Terzic’s angry speech

The day after, referee Daniel Siebert commented on the penalty scene and the BVB coach’s angry speech. “The contact on Adeyemi’s right thigh was so minimal that it did not cause the fall,” the 39-year-old said of the situation. It’s not a swallow, but it’s not enough for a punishment.

Siebert cannot fully understand why Terzic was so angry about his decision: “From his point of view, I can understand that in this individual case. But you have to see the scene in the overall context of the game.” Because there was a similar situation between BVB captain Can and Leverkusen’s Palacios, which he also did not judge.

Siebert, who has been a FIFA referee since 2015, rejects allegations that Adeyemi tends to be more closely monitored by referees. “Mr Terzic cannot expect me to compensate for supposedly wrong decisions from other games. Every match starts again from scratch.” (AFP/sbe/che)
