The captain of the Swiss national team Granit Xhaka is looking forward to the match against the German team at the 2024 European Championship. “Great group. We are looking forward to playing against Germany, the hosts,” the 31-year-old said after Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
“There were already a few statements in the locker room. But even though Germany is not doing well at the moment, they are a very dangerous team with a lot of quality,” said Xhaka, who will also play against Hungary and Scotland in Group A.
It is quite possible that the Swiss will encounter some teammates. The final DFB team included four Bayer kickers in Nagelsmann’s squad: Jonathan Tah, Robert Andrich, Florian Wirtz and Jonas Hofmann.
A special advantage: the short distances. Switzerland will play both against the Hungarians at the start (June 15) and against Scotland four days later in Cologne – practically next door, while Xhaka lives in Düsseldorf. “That makes recovery easier.”
The last match is against Germany in Frankfurt (June 23). “It’s also nice, a little closer to Switzerland,” said Xhaka, who was recently described by DFB sporting director Rudi Völler as a “key figure” at Leverkusen. “When Rudi Völler says something like that, I am proud.”
