Murat Yakin has had some intense days. The Nati coach received a lot of criticism from the media after he missed out on a group win in the European Championship qualifying. Yakin regarded it as a kind of targeted settlement against himself, but nevertheless announced a major analysis of the last ten games. “I wrote everything down, it was very exciting for me,” says Yakin.
The result was a thick dossier that apparently convinced the SFV management that Yakin could fulfill his contract until the end of Euro 2024. “I didn’t expect anything else,” Yakin says succinctly. Nothing other than this cautious show of confidence can be elicited from the association. Nevertheless, Nati director Pierluigi Tami is happy that the issue is off the table for the time being. “We are very happy that we were able to enjoy the draw in peace here in Hamburg,” said Tami.
He himself increased the pressure on Yakin during the disappointing final phase of the European Championship qualifying. Three draws against Belarus, Israel and Kosovo – and most recently the defeat against Romania. Add to that Granit Xhaka’s irritable mood. The Nati captain was angry about the lack of effort during training and repeatedly questioned his attacking position on the field.
After extensive self-reflection, it is clear to Yakin that the disagreement during qualifying must now have consequences. «During my analysis I found out where the priorities are now. “I will take action and make changes,” says Yakin, “we need to tighten the reins.” This is about discipline and atmospheric coordination between players and staff. “Clearly we have to look at the books when it comes to personnel,” Yakin said.
The first priority is to install a person who will strengthen the bond in the team as a bridge builder and officially fulfill his role as assistant coach. Tami had introduced the previously unknown Mister X a year ago. Now Yakin is ready to bring new blood on board. The association still maintains a low profile with its staff. In terms of profile, however, we are talking about a former player. Yakin: “We will first look at it together and then make good decisions.”
The position of Vincent Cavin, who was not present at the European Championship draw in Hamburg, is now under discussion. It had been known for a few days that the current assistant coach could accept an offer from Lausanne as sports director. The position has been vacant since promotion to the Super League. Lausanne CEO Leen Heemskerkes said last summer: “In the longer term, a club like Lausanne needs a sports director.”
